BREAKING NEWS: N11 collision claims one

An alleged U-turn resulted in a chaotic collision on the N11.

One person was killed and a second seriously injured during a collision last night on the N11.

The collision occurred metres away from the Engen Garage. According to information received, a motorist travelling in a bakkie allegedly attempted to do a U-turn.

A truck travelling towards Ladysmith could not brake in time and collided into the bakkie.

According to an ER24 statement, paramedics were called to the scene shortly after 8pm and found the bakkie partially wedged beneath the truck.

While paramedics were able to immediately extract one of the occupants out of the vehicle, his vital signs deteriorated to such an extent that paramedics initiated CPR. He was declared dead after emergency personnel were unable to revive him.

The fire and rescue services used hydraulic rescue equipment to free the second occupant, before he was stabilised and rushed to Madadeni Provincial Hospital. He is currently in critical condition.

Police will conduct an investigation into the matter.
