Update: Escapee re-arrested

Upon spotting police, the suspect tried to ‘make a run for it’, but the officers were quicker and he was arrested

A suspect who escaped from custody last month has been re-arrested due to police acting on a tip-off.

During September this year, Nkosingipile Cyprian Mbatha (24) was standing trial for several cases of business robbery he allegedly committed in the Ladysmith area.

He subsequently escaped from lawful custody while being taken into Ladysmith Correctional Services.

On Sunday (October 25), investigating officer Captain BR Mntambo from Ladysmith Detective Services sourced valuable information as to the whereabouts of the escapee. He quickly put together a small task team and rushed out to the Nhlanhlani area (Pomeroy), where they located their man.

Upon spotting the officers, the suspect tried to ‘make a run for it’, but police were quicker and he was arrested.

Mbatha will face charges of business robbery, as well as a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
