Vryheid High School – A successful year concluded

BESIDES the end-year examinations which have to be completed, this year is almost part of VHS history.

As always when one reflects on the year behind us at a school like VHS there are both tragedies and triumphs to remember. We lost staff members and even a learner which is sad and challenging to process. However, we have also experienced many successes of which we can be very proud.

Academically, culturally and on the sports fields our learners have excelled. The numbers of certificates, trophies and even academic sponsorships for Grade 12s are evidence of the many successes our learners have achieved in 2015.

Herewith just a few highlights of the year: Best academic achievements for 2015: Aliya Paruk Merit Certificate: First in Gr 8; Nicole Muhl Merit Certificate: First in Gr 9; Jurgen Paul Merit Certificate: First in Gr 10; Karl Hellberg Merit Certificate: First in Gr 11; Lukhona Mpungose Merit Certificate: First in Gr 12.

The cultural and sports achievements are just too many to mention, so just a few interesting ones:

Pietie Keeve – The headmaster received a letter from Mr A Prinsloo (KZN Platteland Afrigter) commending P Keeve’s rugby skills and general demeanour during the recent National Academy’s rugby week.

Devin Aspden – Congratulations to Devin Aspden who was on a tour to Italy in October as member of the ITEC SA Platteland u/19 rugby team.

Zhanique Eckersley – Travelled to New York. She was selected by the Travel and Sport agency as one of the academic top ten achievers who qualified to go on this tour. The purpose of this tour was to visit top universities such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton where they attended private lectures and were taken sight-seeing. She returned more informed about possibilities for further studies and enriched by new friendships and a cultural growth.
