A man died when his vehicle was involved in what looked like a high-speed collision on the corner of Beaconsfield and Smith Streets.

His car overturned and landed on the pavement while the other car, a Ford Focus, crashed through the fence of the same house on the corner of  Beaconsfield and Smith Streets.

Witness, Thys, who lives on Beaconsfield Street said he heard a ‘tremendous crash at around 5am’.

“The Ford Focus had travelled up Smith Street, from the taxi rank area, even though that section of the street is one-way only.  The other car was going down Beaconsfield Street and both vehicles crashed somewhere in the middle of the intersection.”

It appears as if the driver of the second vehicle did not stop at the stop sign, police said.

Thys said the driver of the Ford Focus had asked him to ‘please help’ him out of the car which he did.  The other driver sustained serious injuries when his car overturned.  He apparently lived for a while before succumbing to his injuries.

One vehicle had NDE plates and the other car personalised plates.  Police are currently at the scene and the road is blocked.
