Breaking the silence on corruption

Whether it reaches the realm of Government or spills onto the cricket field, South Africans are no stranger to corruption at any level.
But what if corruption hits a little closer to home?
A resident contacted the Newcastle Advertiser late last week, seeking advice on how to open a case against an institution he accused of corruption.
Seeking answers to his question, the Advertiser delved into the matter.
According to SAPS Cluster Spokesman, Captain Shooz Magudulela, any resident can visit a local police station to report and open a corruption case.
However, he advised residents to approach the Station Commander directly.
“The investigation will then be taken over by IPID (the acronym denoting the Independent Police Investigate Directorate). A general detective will not be assigned to a corruption case.”
IPID is mandated to provide independent and impartial oversight over any criminality, committed by SAPS and Municipal Police Services officials.

In the event of a corruption case beyond the bounds of law enforcement, organisations such as the National Anti-Corruption Forum (NACF) exist to cover the sectors of business, civil society and Government.
The NACF reports its findings to Parliament on a regular basis.
