Ward 7 residents take to the street

Yesterday, protesting residents pointed out that they had written a letter to the municipality notifying them about the march that was held on January 25, but no one from the municipality had made themselves available to listen to their complaints.

Angry Ward 7 residents took to the municipal buildings yesterday to voice their complaints regarding poor service delivery.
The community members, who were part of the march which was held in Bernica on January 25, say that they decided to protest in front of the municipal buildings as their issues seem not to be taken seriously.
Among the issues mentioned in a memorandum handed to the municipal manager, the residents say that their ward councillor, Thulani Ndlovu, does not seem concerned with what is happening in his ward. Mayor Patience Khaba was unavailable to address the protesters as she was said to be in Ulundi.
The residents pointed out that they had written a letter to the municipality notifying them about the march, which was held on January 25, but no one from the municipality had made themselves available to listen to their complaints.
Water, electricity, RDP houses, jobs, and public transport, were among the demands mentioned in the memorandum.
The residents say that they are, “sick and tired of the AbaQulusi Municipality’s empty promises.”
Furthermore, residents felt that the arrests of 26 protesters during the previous march was uncalled for.
“The police had no right to arrest those people as no one showed any signs of violence during that protest,” said one of the community members who wished to remain anonymous.
Members of the community said they were completely disrespected by the police and are still very upset about how the matter was handled.
Yesterday, the memorandum was signed by the MM who said that she would convey the message to the mayor, and AbaQulusi municipality has been given seven days to respond.
