PREMIER Senzo Mchunu ordered an investigation into the illegal sale of tanker loads of water intended for the relief of drought-stricken areas of the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal last week.
According to the premier, a water truck driver in Nongoma was fired for selling water at about R300.
“We have dispatched officials from the Office of the Premier to investigate and possibly arrest that person on the spot.”
He was disgusted at the fact that some people are taking advantage of the water crisis as a means to make a quick buck.
The premier said that the department was uncertain of the exact details on the driver, but said that an investigation had been launched into Ward 4 in Nongoma.
In a report by the Independent Online, Zululand District Municipality manager, Johan de Klerk expressed great shock.
“I find it strange that such a thing is happening. If it is one of our drivers or contractors, it must be reported to the authorities,” De Klerk said.
He said the trucks, which the municipality used to deliver water in four of the five local municipalities, have notices in English and Zulu stating the water was not for sale.
De Klerk said anyone who was aware of their drivers selling water should report it to their offices, as water is absolutely free.
