More than 30 motorists were arrested in Newcastle this past weekend after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

Those arrested included a financial adviser, three teachers, three truck drivers, a security guard, a drill operator, an artisan, a technician, three drivers, a petrol attendant, a general worker, 11 unemployed people, four self-employed people, a taxi driver, a union organiser, an IT technician, an intern, a radiologist, a prison warden, an administrative clerk, a packaging operator and a landscaper.

Over 6500 drunk drivers arrested since August 2025

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said more than 6,500 motorists have been arrested for drunk driving since the inception of Operation #NenzaniLaEzweni in August 2025.

Duma said the operation has played an integral role in reducing alcohol-related road fatalities and accidents, with around 98%.

He concluded by thanking all key role-players for their continued support and dedication to the operation, which aims to ensure that KwaZulu-Natal’s roads remain safe for innocent road users.
