SOCIAL Development MEC, Weziwe Thusi, visited Vryheid on Sunday as part of her initiative to improve living conditions within the AbaQulusi community.
Having visited the town last year, she found close to 258 people living at the local dumpsite, most of whom were unemployed and depending on collecting items from the site, which they sold as part of recycling in order to make ends meet, the MEC promised to return to Vryheid with means to help these people.
Since then, the MEC set out to sending social workers out on household profiling duties at the homes at the dumpsite and other informal settlements.
This was done so that the Department of Social Development could find out what basic needs these people lack and what can be done to meet these.
Early Childhood Development Centre (ECDC) equipment, toys, desks, chairs and learning materials to an ECDC were handed out.
Food parcels were also handed out to the elderly.
DSD say that they are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that service is brought to the people
