Last Saturday, friends and family of Sphelele Ndlovu, the Bhekuzulu Primary Grade 4 learner who was hit by a car whilst on her way to fetch water with friends on Sunday, February 21.
Sphelele was described as having been a responsible child by her mother Nomusa Zulu who addressed the press about the matter on the Friday prior to her child’s funeral.
“She wanted there to be water for me to cook when I got back from church,” said the heartbroken mother as she sat with the child’s grandmother on a mattress at their home awaiting the arrival of the child’s body from the mortuary.
Nomusa said that she received the bad news by telephone from a relative who, with other community members, had rushed to the crash scene last Sunday afternoon.
“She had apparently been hit on the head by the mirror of a car and thrown in the air, there was no damage to the car except for the mirror,” she said.
Recalling what she saw at the scene, Nomusa said that she was stopped from seeing the child, but her little body was lying on the road, covered, some metres from the car. There were tyre marks on the road and the water container was there too.
In a report by the Independent Online, the principal of Bhekuzulu Primary described Sphelele as a very responsible child and ever-smiling little lady.
“It was a terrible situation, difficult to see, it was horrible and for what, 5 litres of water? ” she said.
A psychologist has been brought in to counsel Sphelele’s classmates as some of them saw the accident first hand.
