Holi is a festival celebrated with coloured powder and water sprinkled by participants on one another
The Shri Siva Soobramoniar Temple will be observe Panguni Utthiram on Wednesday, March 23, at 6pm.
There will be the Iduman Kavady, temple chariot and the Kovil Kavady, while devotees can carry the Paal Kodums for Lord Muruga. There will be no charge for the Paal Kodums. Devotees are to only come with their Kodums to participate.
In South India, Panguni Pournami is celebrated as Panguni Utthiram and in North India as the Holi Festival. Since the Poorna Chandra (full moon) is ascendant in the star Utthiram, this is known as the festival of Uttira.
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi were married on Panguni Pournam (full moon); Mother Seetha and Lord Rama also married on Panguni Pournami. We also know that Mother Deivana and Lord Murugan were married on Panguni Pournami. Hence this day is known as Kalyana Vratham and most Murugan temples carry Kavady on Panguni Utthiram day. Holika was Hiranya Kasip’s sister, who would kill and consume children. Hiranya asked her sister Holika to enter the fire with Prahalada on her lap so that Prahalada would die, but she refused. Holika had a boon that she could not be destroyed by fire and Prahalada’s devotion to Lord Vishnu was so great that He remained unharmed and Holika was burnt to death.
The story is related on Holi. In the north, an effigy of Holika is burnt during these celebrations. Krishna played Holi with the Gopika’s in the Vrindhavan.
Every month, the full moon day signifies a special day and is either celebrated as a festival or observed as a fast. In other words, any Pournami day has religious significance and following traditional practices brings us benefits, happiness and welfare. Devotees are welcome to join this year’s Panguni Utthiram.
