Shelters still a problem

IT IS still unclear what the AbaQulusi Municipality plans to do with the now vacant informal stalls/ shelters which were initially built to be used by informal traders at the plaza taxi rank.

Last year it was decided that the stalls would be demolished after the informal traders refused to move into them, claiming that this would hide the goods they had on sale.

These stalls, are second after those that were built at the Mondlo taxi rank (which also stand vacant after Emondlo residents refused to move to the new taxi rank), to be considered yet another waste of money.

It is unclear what the municipality plans to do about the plaza shelters.

Last year, the SAPS recovered a dead body in one of these shelters and community members said that it is only a matter of time before more criminal activities start taking place there.

According to one of the informal traders the smell of dagga is common around these shelters and those who seek a more ‘private’ spot to drink often make use of these shelters.

It was also alleged that the ‘ladies of the night’ used the shelters as headquarters for their services.

The AbaQulusi Municipality was contacted on Monday, February 29 with regards to the matter but to no avail
