IT SEEMS that there is no stopping the community members of Ward 7 as they were once again marching in town last week, this time to the local SAPS offices.
The angry residents said that they wanted to express their displeasure at how they were treated by the police who are under Colonel James Luvuno’s command.
The issue surfaced after 27 Ward 7 community members were arrested at the first march, which was held at the Bernica area on January 25.
According to the memorandum, which these residents handed over to the SAPS, they felt violated by the police and still stand behind the statement that no violence broke out during the protest.
Following the incident, the community members wrote a letter to the KZN Provincial Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni explaining the events that took part on the day, but they did not receive a response.
As a means of retaliating against what they claim the SAPS did to them, these community members say that they will not be voting in the coming local municipal elections.
According to the SAPS, the crowd was protesting illegally and this was the reason the police were sent out to Bernica to disperse them.
“There are proper procedures and documents that need to be obtained from the municipality in order for a march to take place. That is common knowledge,” said Col James Luvuno.
He said that the protestors started to get out of control as they forced children who were being transported by buses to a nearby school in Bernica to join them.
“This was unlawful and unacceptable,” he said.
