A group of young people employed by the Endumeni Municipality, through the Government’s expanded public works programme, have downed tools because they have not been paid.
The group of around 20 were hired to build a public park in Forestdale but the company to whom the Government awarded the tender to, has not paid their workers.
The tender was awarded to Isibani Solwazi, based at eTholeni, by the Department of Environmental Affairs.
This is not the first time that there has been a hiccup in handing over salaries. Late last year, the Courier intervened when the workers had not received their money.
Now that there has been a ‘re-enactment’ of non-payment and workers are demanding that action be taken. They said they were promised R82 a day.
Endumeni Mayor Thulani Mahaye had to intervene to solve the problem after the local Councillor, Thoko Makaba, was called. A list of grievances was handed to Mayor Mahaye. This matter is expected to be solved next week.
