Is Aviary Hill becoming the new dumpsite?
Neglect has left the once-pristine suburb in absolute disarray.
A drive through the quiet, peaceful and blooming suburb of Aviary Hill used to make you feel as though you were driving on a different planet compared to the rest of town.
The suburb was thriving. It was kept in the most pristine condition, with beautiful lawns, driveways and even open fields.
You almost felt as if you had gotten lost in a sort of fairy-tale land… You know, the ones you read about in books. However, lately, the suburb tells a very different story.
Aviary Hill has become neglected and has been left in a state of disarray.
The roads are severely damaged, grass is overgrown, sidewalks have been dug up and left open, sewage is flowing in places, and illegal dumping seems to have become the norm.
Once-pristine suburb shows signs of neglect
The Newcastle Advertiser, accompanied by NDRF ward candidates Shawn Vermaak and Marlize Greyvenstein, took a drive through the area this morning (Wednesday, October 7) and were shocked by how much the once-fanciest part of town appears to have deteriorated.
A quick eye-catcher was at the corner of Victoria and Drakensberg drives, where a large trench was dug up months ago to fix a water leak. The Advertiser has previously reported on the issue, which the municipality promised to resolve.
However, the trench remains open, posing a serious risk to pedestrians, especially at night, while water is still pooling, suggesting that the leak has not been repaired as expected.

Furthermore, the area around Reier Crescent is also a major eyesore, with the entire length of the road littered with household refuse and building materials.
The carcasses of dead animals have also reportedly been found in the vicinity, leaving residents to wonder whether Aviary Hill has now become the new ‘go-to’ dumpsite when you miss rubbish collection day.
The Newcastle Advertiser has sent an official media enquiry to the municipality and will publish its response when and if it is received.
