Captain Izak Boshoff leads from the front
His dedication to the rugby club paid off, as he was stand-in captain for a few years before making captain for the past three consecutive years

Izak Boshoff, also known as ‘Sakkie’ by his friends, is one of the most dedicated rugby players you will find.
This 33-year-old star has been playing rugby ever since he can remember, starting with Bulletjie rugby at Klipriver and carrying on in Monument, moving on the “big guys” at Ladysmith High School (LHS) before playing university rugby and finally 13 years of club rugby for the Bulldogs.
He is the owner of a very successful restaurant, bar and bed & breakfast called ‘Malibu Palms’, which he runs with his wife. He doesn’t only show dedication on the field, as he has been married for seven years and has been with his wife for 14 years. They are raising a boy, and Izak says he would love to see him play and excel at rugby.
His dedication to the rugby club paid off, as he was stand-in captain for a few years before making captain for the past three consecutive years.
He is a very modest man and when he was called to receive his honours for Northern Natal Rugby (as he played for Northern Natal for seven years), he did not make a big fuss about it to all his teammates and rather went to the prize-giving alone.
When asked who his role models are, he kept it South African by saying, “Marcell Coetzee and Jacques Botes”.
He is a team player and strongly believes that many hands make light work.
He thinks the Bulldogs will “keep working” as they all work well together. This shows, as they were the runner-up team in the Midlands League last year. This year, they seem to have improved even more.
He says he would not have been able to excel as he has in rugby without his wife, who has been there since starting at the rugby club. He also says his parents and in-laws are major supporters, and also make his rugby possible as they are at every game.
If you cannot find Izak on the field, you will find him next to the water or in his workshop, as he also enjoys fishing and building. In the next five years, Izak says, “I see myself still in Ladysmith, still at Malibu and still on the field.”
