Members from (Public Order Police) POP Pietermaritzburg, who are working in the Uthukela area, were acting on information during the early hours of Friday morning, April 29, which led to the arrest of two people and the recovery of three unlicensed firearms.

At about 3am the police officers went to the Mngwenya area of Weenen where a 47-year-old suspect was arrested. He was found in possession of an unlicensed revolver and five rounds of ammunition.

A second suspect, aged 33, was arrested in the same area after he was found in possession of an unlicensed .38 special revolver.

In the same vicinity police also found a rifle as well as three rounds of ammunition left abandoned. Both suspects appeared in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the members for recovery of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“All these firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to establish whether they were used for committing any crime in the country. The number of unlicensed firearms recovered proves that the police are making sure that all those who are possessing unlicensed firearms are brought to book,” she said.
