Another car through a wall

Eventide cottages resident, Rose Godfrey, had a surprise visitor early on Mother’s Day when an out of control car hit the wall that surrounds the complex on Beaconsfield Street.

Mrs Godfrey said she was awake at about 2am today writing messages to her ‘girls for Mother’s Day’ when she heard the screeching of car brakes and then a ‘tremendous crash’.

Upon investigating, she found that a car had hit the wall, sending a spatter of bricks and some car parts into her garden.

The car was on the pavement.  The driver, believed to be a teenager who had ‘stole’ his grannies car, fled the scene apparently unscathed.

Police arrived about an hour later, Mrs Godfrey said. “The boy’s granny also arrived and was shocked.  She also apologised for the damage to the wall.”  The car, which was badly damaged, was taken away by the police.

Witnesses who live on Beaconsfield Street and saw the crash told the Courier that the car overtook a security bakkie but obviously had no knowledge of the newly installed speed bump outside Eventide.

“The driver saw the big bump too late.  He tried to brake but the car went out of control, climbed the pavement and hit the wall.  There are no warning signs about the new speed bump although this young driver was speeding.” said the witness who did not want to be named.
