A public meeting was held last week to allow ‘interested and affected parties’ to give input following Zinoju Coal’s successful application to mine on land in the Hattingspruit area.
Held at the Bowling Club last Wednesday, the Public Participation Process (PPP) is part of required legislation as laid down by the Department of Minerals and Energy Affairs under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act.
Zinoju plans to mine on various portions of land including Woodlands No 8485 (Remainder, Portion 2, 4, 5); Cleveland No 15597 (Remainder Portion 1, 2); Kelvin Grove No. 4474 (Portion 1, 2, 3, 5); Impati 10260 (Remainder) and Wild Duck Vlei No.7871 (Remainder, Portion 1).
The aim of the public participation process is to ensure all interested and affected parties (IAPs) have been identified and are invited to engage in the scoping process.
Frank Talbot, Mineral Resource Manager, said the process hopes to also raise awareness, educate and increase understanding of IAP’s about the process and project.
“It is there to ensure open channels of communication between the IAP’s and the project team, provide opportunities for IAP’s to identify issues, raise concerns and suggestions, document all opinions, concerns and queries raised by the IAP’s and ensure consideration of alternatives, issues and solutions.”
