13 and singing at the show

Liila started taking singing lessons when she was in Grade 2 and began singing professionally last year

At the tender age of 13 years old, the girl they call Liila took the stage on Friday evening at the annual Ladysmith Show to entertain the crowd. She sang a few cover versions of well-known songs, as well as some of her own originals.

She started taking singing lessons when she was in Grade 2 and began singing professionally last year.

Liila was born in America and her father worked away from home a lot. Her mom was the one who gave her the nickname Liila, which has stuck and is now her stage name.

She attends a private school in Pretoria Midstreams Estates and is currently in Grade 8. She plans to finish school and bring out another CD soon.

She says performing is an amazing, indescribable experience and hopes to one day be as “big” as Karlien van Jaarsveld. Her role models are Nadine, Celine Dion and Adele.

Liila lives by the mantra: “You were born an original, don’t die a copy.”

One of her songs, ‘1000 Woorde’, was a real crowd-pleaser at the show.

She says she really likes Ladysmith people, as they are incredibly hospitable.
