Truck driver lies about hijacking
The driver lied about the hijacking in order to cover up the fact that he had been involved in an accident in the Roosboom area
A man has appeared in court for defeating the ends of justice after it was found that he had lied about his truck being hijacked.
A case of truck hijacking was reported in the Estcourt area on Wednesday. The 43-year-old truck driver alleged that he had been hijacked at the N3 Ultra City by two armed gunmen.
He further alleged that the suspects drove him to the Roosboom area, where he fought his attackers.
The suspects then fled, taking the truck driver’s cell-phone and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The truck was later recovered by the Uthukela Cluster Trio Crime Project Task Team.
The task team members received the docket for further investigation and it was determined that the driver had in fact lied about the hijacking incident in order to cover up the fact that he had been involved in an accident in the Roosboom area.
The property alleged to have been taken was also discovered in the possession of the truck driver.
The suspect appeared in court on Friday, facing charges of defeating the course of justice.
