Sales of Blackberry phones have plummeted from record highs of 52 million phones in 2011 to 3.2 million in 2016
Blackberry are officially killing off their ‘Classic’ handset with its iconic old-school keyboard. The announcement was made earlier this week.
But it is not just the classic in trouble, with WhatsApp and Facebook having announced that they are abandoning Blackberry.
Last month, Facebook confirmed it is to drop support for all BlackBerry phones. In an official blog post, Blackberry confirmed that the social media giant will discontinue essential APIs (software applications for its platform), including those in BlackBerry 10 and BBOS, by the end of 2016.
The move will mean existing Facebook and WhatsApp apps running on the phones could be affected.
The platform said it was ‘extremely disappointed in their decision, as we know so many users love these apps’.
Blackberry developers are rallying BB fans to social media to let Facebook know how they feel with the hashtag #ILoveBB10Apps, but it is a long shot indeed. Sales of Blackberry phones have plummeted from record highs of 52 million phones in 2011 to 3.2 million phones sold in 2016.
But as sales drop and Blackberry use declines, we ask: “Where do old Blackberry phones go to die?”
