Travel safely as the holidays come to an end

Be certain to check your tyre pressure, oil and water, and that all your vehicle's lights are working

With the final week of our June / July school holidays here, a lot of people will be travelling on the country’s roads.

Here are a few tips to keep you safe on the roads:

– Be certain to check your tyre pressure, oil and water, and that all your vehicle’s lights are working.

– If you are planning on spending the last week camping and have a trailer attached to your vehicle, be certain that the axle is secure and that your lights are connected to the trailer. You want to be certain that the cars travelling behind you are aware when you apply brakes.

– When travelling long distances, stop every two hours if your trip is more than three hours, be it just to stretch your legs, get something to drink or have a light snack.

– Keeping hydrated is of great importance, as it keeps your brain awake and your body refreshed.

– Make sure that if your baggage is packed in the car, it does not obstruct your view and that you can see in your rear-view mirror.

– If you have children in the car with you, be certain all body parts are inside the vehicle and keep family / friends updated as to where you are whenever you have time to stop for that much-needed rest.

– It is great if you have more than one licensed driver, as this way, after every two-hourly stop, you can switch and have a rest.

– Do not get distracted when on the road and be certain that the children know they should be sitting still. Another distraction could be anything that blinds you, so be certain you do not have anything on your dashboard that could potentially distract you.

– If you drive with glasses, definitely wear them and pay attention to road signs, drive with comfortable shoes and always wear your seat belt. Keep in mind that children under the age of 12 should be buckled up in the back seat.

Be your destination home or afar, travel safely and remember: keep left, pass right!
