LENNOXTON – After efforts to control illegal dumping on Hathorn Street proved futile, it is hoped the introduction of five additional municipal skips will put a stop to this shameful habit.

Although ‘no dumping’ signs were erected in this area in January, illegal dumping continued, despite a warning on the signs that trespassers would be fined R750 if found guilty.
The additional skips seem to alleviate the problem for now.
Municipal workers collect the refuse on a weekly basis.
“It is becoming frustrating for the Department to mop up every time someone dumps illegally. It is a problem prevalent throughout Newcastle,” said Ward 3 Councillor, Matthew Shunmugam.
“It is matter which I am going to take up with Council regarding enforcement of the bylaw, especially the issue of fining defaulters,” concluded Cllr Shunmugam.
However, dumping in Hathorn Street extends further down the road to the public park. Household refuse, construction debris and even a kitchen sink mar the area.
