Police have noticed an increase in fraud involving South African Revenue Service (SARS) tax returns since the beginning of July.

It has been alleged that clients receive their IRP5’s and go to a SARS office to submit their tax returns. Once there, they are notified that it has already been submitted via e-filling.

Victims of this are left shocked, confused as well as unaware of how and when their tax returns were submitted using e-filling.
A number of cases have been reported in the province.

Police urge locals to be aware of this scam. “Police are investigating fraud cases and no arrests have been made.

“Make sure that your documents are always safe and do not hand it to any strangers, as they might use that information to scam SARS,” advised police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.
