Water leaks and sewer problems for 30 years

79-year-old Mr Francois Roets and other residents of Buller Street, Colenso, are fed up with the sewage woes and waste of water that has been going on for years.

They say that water seeps out from under their pavements and under their homes as well, and that stagnant water fills their gardens day and night.

Mr Roets has been living in Buller Street for 30 years and ever since he bought his house, he has had to endure these same problems.

The pavement in front of his yard is water damaged, and he battles to plant and clean his garden because he says the constant sewer water just “messes everything up”.

“I have phoned and sent letters to uThukela numerous times.

“I even have all the names written down of the people I spoke to, but up until now, nothing has been done,” says Mr Roets.

Other residents are furious because they save water and adhere to the water restrictions, while uThukela seem to have a ‘don’t care’ attitude when it comes to playing their part and fixing leaking pipes.

Another resident has wooden floors in his home that are getting damaged with all the water seeping up from underground.

“Who will fix and pay if my floors rot away? Will uThukela pay? I doubt it!” fumed the resident.

A huge Pine tree in another resident’s yard recently fell down because of all the water. The tree missed the house by inches.

“I am an elderly person and I cannot fix these problems. I am a ratepayer and pay my water account every month, so it’s unfair that I should have to live with a problem like this all the time,” says Mr Roets.
