WARNING: KZN on high snow alert

 As a cold front moves in and heavy snowfalls are expected from today through Tuesday, July 26, road users are warned to take precautionary measures.

The cold front is said to extend to parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Free State.

According to the South African Weather Services, heavy snowfalls are expected in Mooi River, Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Van Reenen’s Pass, Harrismith, Bethlehem and surrounding areas.The increased possibility of snow also brings about the high likelihood that residents and motorists may be snowed-in, as roads may have to be closed.“Avoid travelling in hazardous conditions,” advised Dave Steele, Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Station Commander for the Ladysmith District in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Driving conditions may become dangerous as snow and black ice cause roads to become treacherous. In the event of this happening, roads could be closed in the interests of the safety of road users and emergency rescue teams,” explained Steele.

All emergency services, law enforcement agencies, rescue and relief services, and disaster management teams in the area have been placed on high alert.

Keep in mind heavy snow storms often cause power failures and communication systems can be under pressure.

”You may not be able to use mobile and telecommunication networks,” warned Con Roux, N3 Toll Concession, Commercial Manager.

Should you have no other option but to travel, it is essential to stay cognisant of weather warnings and the possibility of associated road closures.

“Conditions may change quickly; it is recommended to be well prepared,” said Roux.

Pack extra blankets, food and refreshments in your vehicle in the event of being caught in a lengthy road closure.

People with medical conditions should ensure they travel with sufficient medical supplies and medication.

Also make additional provision for lengthy delays if you are travelling with infants and elderly people.

“Don’t take any risks, be ready for any eventuality and heed warnings,” stressed Roux.
