Forderville play park is unsafe for children

Dangerous protruding metal stumps are all that remains of the swings that once were part of the park

Residents have expressed great concern regarding the condition of the park/playground situated at the end of 1st Avenue and 3rd Avenue in Forderville.

The park has become a dirty, damaged and vandalised area, putting the safety of little children at great risk. Heaps of ash from fires, burnt grass, strewn dirt and rusty and damaged playing equipment greets you as you make your way to the park.

“How are children meant to play, be safe and enjoy themselves in such a place?” asked a local.

A metal plate is missing from the end of the slide, leaving dangerous metal spikes on the slide. Residents are further concerned about the bar missing on the roundabout.

Dangerous protruding metal stumps are all that remains of the swings that once were part of the park. Locals have suggested that the municipality refurbish the park within a reasonable time frame. If the municipality fails to do so, the back-up plan would be to get local business people involved to make the area safe for the children.

The park is currently being used by Battle Axe Ministries for youth meetings every Saturday and too often has to be cleaned up by the members before commencing any activities.

“I appeal to you to please repair the damaged equipment for the sake of our children. “I am not affiliated to any political party; neither do I want to hammer our municipality. “All I wish is to make this a really a safe place for our children to play,” said Pastor Pramesh from Battle Axe Ministries.

Acting Municipal Manager Elphas Dladla called the comments made by the residents very ‘positive with clear intent to trigger necessary attention’.

“Our team will inspect the facility to plan a remedy and rehabilitation,” added Mr Dladla.
