Now, nobody is officially saying it’s “end of days” weather… But with gale-force winds, extreme temperatures and snow sweeping through several parts of the country – leading to the interruption of electricity supply, damage to property and, in some cases, loss of life – it makes you think!
With South Africa hit by not one but two tornados in less than two days, people are hinting at the worst weather to hit SA in over a decade.
Added to heavy snowfall all around Ladysmith and you can see why people are concerned…
While KZN had record-breaking rain…
The South African Weather Service confirmed that KZN has experienced record rainfall over the last 24 hours. The estimated rainfall is 203mm in Margate and 99mm in Durban South. Residents and motorists were urged to be careful, as the storm has already destroyed buildings and claimed the life of a woman who was swept off a low-lying bridge in Silverglen, Chatsworth.

The number of people injured in the structural collapse caused by the tornado that swept through Tembisa yesterday has risen to 20, The Citizen reports.
In a media statement posted on the Gauteng Provincial Health Department Facebook page, the Gauteng Department of Health described how Tembisa Tertiary Hospital was affected by the tornado. The hospital’s fence, carports and about 20 vehicles belonging to employees, including three ambulances, were damaged. The roof of one building was also damaged and some trees were uprooted.
With SA weather expected to get worse, everyone is asking: “What next?”
The South African Weather Service has issued warnings of intense weather conditions – including heavy rainfall, snow, tornados and extreme cold – this week.
