Endumeni is in for a boom with news that plans are going ahead to build a private hospital and medical university between Dundee and Glencoe. There are also plans to extend the Majuba College to accommodate 3000 students.
This was said by Mayor Thulani Mahaye who was speaking in support of ANC Ward 7 candidate, Dolly Hlongwane, at the Endumeni Senior Citizens Club at the Glencoe Town Hall.
While admitting that Glencoe had been ‘neglected’ and that ‘houses are needed in the Glenridge area and jobs are paramount’, Mayor Mahaye said that by supporting the ANC in the August 3 local government elections, voters would be voting for development.
Answering a question from the floor where the ANC was slammed for ‘continuing to make promises of housing yet for 15 years not a single house has been built for Indians or whites, only in the township’. Mayor Mahaye said plans were at an advanced stage to build 600 homes on the Glencoe commonage.
“The project is with the Human Settlements Department. The ANC governs nationally, provincially, regionally and locally. This is the party that sees to development.” He said the outstanding title deeds to be handed over to Glenridge residents should be finalised ‘very soon’.

Earlier, Ms Hlongwane said Ward 7 is a new ward that sees Glencoe as a ‘stand-alone ward’ – that incorporates Thelapi near Marie Ratschitz Mission – and this new demarcation will ensure that Glencoe gets a better deal.
Born in Thelapi, Ms Hlongwane said she works for the Public Works Department in Ladysmith but once elected, she will have an office in Glencoe to serve all residents. She was concerned about the high unemployment which has seen young people loitering around the streets and easily falling into alcohol and drug habits.
“I like elderly people… we can learn a lot from them. I to have an opportunity to represent your interests in the Endumeni Council.”
