Luke was the first to audition and the first to walk away clutching a golden ticket
The much-anticipated season 12 of Idols South Africa kicked off about three weeks ago. The first episode (Durban auditions) was met with excitement and filled with a lot of entertaining highlights.
Estcourt-born Luke (Nontobeko) Ntombela’s performances being one. The 26-year-old sang a cover of “Like I’m gonna lose you” by Meghan Trainor.
Luke was the first to audition and the first to walk away clutching a golden ticket. That’s not all; she managed to get four yeses, including one from Idols judge Randall Abrahams “the bad judge”.
This young lady who is passionate about music, spilled over with excitement. It’s safe to say Luke was Durban’s perfect start. Luke is currently waitressing in Durban and locals are hoping that she becomes South Africa’s next singing sensation.
Her dream is to fulfil a career in music. Luke and her team, Team Robbie, won the Clash of the Choirs in 2014. The television programme sees the country’s best voices battle for the title.
Luke’s team was also named the country’s ‘best new amateur choir’ during the finale The choir walked away with R750 000, R250 000 went to Ikhwezi Welfare Center and R50 000 split amongst the choir members.
Part of the prize was a recording deal with Sony. Luke was not the only entrant that hailed from Estcourt. Andile Thambo also auditioned to be part of the Idols competition.
The 27-year-old sang a rendition of ‘Uthando’ for the panel of judges, and they were not impressed. Sadly his singing journey ended there, leaving his performance in the ‘Wooden Mic’ category.
We wish Luke all the best on the musical journey she has embarked on and if you missed it, you can watch her audition here https://bit.ly/2a5cxxT
