The Martial eagle is Africa’s largest eagles and one of the most powerful avian predators.

They are apex predators – being at the top of the food chain.

Up to 45% of their diet is made up of other birds. But they are capable of bringing down , dassies, foxes, monkeys and even young impala.

They strike from the air, spotting prey from as far as 5km away.

In 2014 Robin Colyn, Birdlife SA’s Project Manager at Ingula discovered the nest of a breeding pair in a section of Ingula’s escarpment forest.

A chick eventually was hatched and fledged (having wing feathers that are large enough for flight, able to fly) in 2014.

Robin has been keeping an eye on the couple ever since and they are once again setting up nest in the same spot…

Apart from being Africa’s most iconic eagles they are also the most threatened being listed as endangered.
