Today is Raksha Bandhan

It is a day when siblings pray for each other's well-being, and wish each other happiness and goodwill

Hindus around the world will be celebrating Raksha Bandhan today (Thursday).

Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of the special relationship that exists between a brother and a sister (the bond of affection between brothers and sisters).

Raksha Bandhan is a day when siblings pray for each other’s well-being, and wish each other happiness and goodwill.

The name ‘Raksha Bandhan’ suggests ‘a bond of protection’.

On this auspicious day, brothers make a promise to their sisters to protect them from all harm and troubles, and sisters pray to God to protect their brothers from all evil.

The festival falls on the Shravan Purnima, which comes generally in the month of August.

Sisters tie a silk thread called a rakhi around their brother’s wrist and pray for their well-being. Brothers, in turn, promise to take care of their sisters.

For everyone, it is an opportunity to reunite and celebrate.

People also share tasty dishes and sweets, exchange gifts and share their past experiences.

For those who are not able to meet each other, rakhi cards, e-rakhis and rakhis through the mail perform the function of spreading the rakhi messages.

Handmade rakhis and self-made rakhi cards are a representation of the personal feelings between siblings.
