Little ones enjoy K9 display
The children in Grade RR and R were fascinated by the dog’s impressive ability to detect money
On Thursday morning, officers from the Ladysmith and Durban K9 Units honoured an invitation that was received from Ladysmith’s Monument Primary School.
Ladysmith K9 Unit member Warrant Officer J Meyer began by conducting awareness on the identification as well as ill effects of drugs. Thereafter, a display was done by Warrant Officer H van Zyl and his partner, Zeus, who is a patrol dog.
Warrant Officer CJH Steenkamp did a drug display using his drug detection dog, Lotus, who is a patrol dog. Sgt Xaba from the Durban K9 Unit was on hand too and he conducted a display using his currency detection dog named Erica.
The Belgium Shepherd is presently the only dog doing the specialised function of currency detection in the country. Their partnership has yielded several successes and commendations.

The officers, in turn, were impressed by the young ones’ ability to distinguish and identify certain drugs. The children had clearly been well-educated by parents and teachers about the dangers of these drugs.
