Emergency teams put trauma response skills to the test
A mock accident scene was staged to demonstrate how emergency teams respond to serious road collisions.
Mediclinic Newcastle hosted World Trauma Day simulations on Friday (October 17) in collaboration with RTI, Community Safety, the South African Police Service (SAPS), EMRS, ER24, TRIVS Ambulance Services, Magenta Medical Services and Atlas Towing.
To commemorate World Trauma Day, the participating services staged a mock accident scene at the hospital to demonstrate how emergency teams respond to serious road collisions.
Mock crash demonstrates emergency response
The simulation involved two motor vehicles that had been in a head-on collision. Two patients were trapped inside one vehicle, while two others had been ejected from the second vehicle.
The Fire Department used the ‘jaws of life’ to cut open the vehicle, allowing paramedics to reach, assess and treat the trapped patients.
Raising awareness of trauma care
According to Ziyaad Warasally of ER24, these simulations aim to educate hospital staff and members of the public about the trauma response process, from the initial accident scene to patients arriving at hospital and being handed over to medical staff.
