No matric farewell for Lasec Grade 12s
The conditions were not met and therefore there will be no matric farewell this year
There will be no matric farewell for the learners of Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) this year.
According to the school, in view of the absolutely poor performance and negative attitude to schoolwork by the majority of the Grade 12 learners, the school decided to make the matric farewell conditional.
Conditions were implemented for the learners to achieve in order for a matric farewell to take place, as follows:
* An overall pass rate of 94% must be attained in the June examination;
* Collective change in the behaviour of the Grade 12 learners;
* A positive attitude towards their studies.
These conditions were not met and therefore there will be no matric farewell this year.
Many people feel this is unfair towards the learners, while some believe it is the right thing to do.
Before going to press, a Ladysmith Gazette journalist interviewed Lasec principal Mr AN Govender and this is what he had to say.
“Our main purpose at the Grade 12 level is to ensure that our learners obtain meaningful results that will allow them to pursue their rightful futures.
Meetings were held with the parents, as well as the learners of the school, where the matter was discussed and both parties agreed and supported the school decision.
“Parents must also support and get more informed about their child’s academic career; then we can all move ahead.”
