A small town with a big heart

Estcourtonians have once again shown that a small town has a big heart.
With the wrap up of the eighth 24-hour CanSA Relay for Life on Sunday, September 4, the committee held a presentation function last Wednesday. The purpose of the function was to reflect on the Relay as well as handover the funds raised. Event Chairperson Anil Sookraj said that raising money was not the main focus of hosting the Relay, but rather to bring together people of all backgrounds at a common venue, raising awareness for a common cause.
About 2 500 people walked on the track to support this year’s Relay and coupled with donations, the Estcourt CanSA Support Group raised R76 000 to donate to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CanSA).
Calling the Relay for Life in Estcourt ‘spectacular’, CanSA’s Community Mobiliser Bruce Kenneth praised locals for the ‘excellent’ Relay.
“The Estcourt Relay committee is the biggest in KwaZulu-Natal, even though this is a small community, this shows the people’s support to this cause. The Relay looked polished and went on without any hitches. Thank you everyone for another successful event,” he commented.
To conclude the function, the winners of the lucky draw prizes were drawn and a finger supper was enjoyed.
