Cricket Club celebrates 50th anniversary

Vryheid Cricket Club celebrated it’s 50th anniversary in fine style this past weekend.

They held a function at their clubhouse on Friday and Saturday evening, and both were well attended by members from years gone by.

Many an old friendship was rekindled and the memorable (and some not so memorable) stories were shared.

It was a weekend of remembrance and emotion for Vryheid Cricket Club with past members being recognised for their timeless efforts put into the club, as we know it today.

The club would like to thank the attending members who made some serious efforts travelling from far and wide. (Danny Ross even made a special trip from Kenya to attend and taste our local wines!)

A 21 over a side match was played on Saturday between the golden oldies and the youngsters, and was played in the true spirit of the game.

Once again the seniors won the toss without a coin being spun and chose to bat first. As you can imagine, very few singles were taken.

They managed to post an impressive 163 in their allotted overs, which at the end of the day were enough and beat the youngsters by 30 runs and had the bragging rights for the rest of the evening.

Speeches, followed by a superb supper made by Gerhard van der Berg was had on Saturday to end off a fabulous and memorable weekend.

The club would like to thank Adele High for getting all these fine people to attend, the Vorsters, Petersens, Janse van Vuurens, Kobie Mare’, Craig Petersen for the collage, Hendrik Marais for the memorial plaque and all the other individuals that helped.
