Male mayor rejects virgin bursaries?
Former District Mayor Dudu Mazibuko introduced virgin bursaries during her tenure as mayor, sparking a national outcry
According to news reports, uThukela District Municipality Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko agreed with the Commission for Gender Equality and has ended the controversial ‘virgin bursaries’ that were introduced by former mayor Dudu Mazibuko in January this year.
The district municipality, under Dudu Mazibuko, introduced a brand new category of bursaries during her Mayoral Matric Excellence Awards on January 11 this year, the so called ‘virgin bursaries’, sparking a national outcry.

Her male replacement, Mayor Mazibuko (who was a member of the Exco that approved the bursaries), appears to have made a U-turn on the policy, agreeing with the Commission for Gender Equality in shutting down the ‘virgin bursary’ programme.
According to some of the virgins who got bursaries last year, the municipality hasn’t contacted them about ending the ‘virgin bursaries.’

King Goodwill Zwelithini had come out in support of the virgin bursaries and took great umbrage at the Commission for Gender Equality interference with traditional Zulu customs.
uThukela were contacted for response. Their spokesperson stressed that only the mayor himself could comment on the decision. He, however confirmed that the bursaries had been cancelled.
