NEWCASTLE – A transformer exploded in Carrington Street on November 27. A resident, Ishwar Singh, said he saw a huge fire near his home, and thought a house was on fire, but later realised it was the transformer that blew up.
“Before I could even phone the fire brigade, they were there. Their response was excellent. The municipal workers also arrived promptly.”

According to Mr Singh, the municipal distribution team consisted of Shadrek Ngwenya, Barney Mare, Vernon Potgieter, Ashvir Singh and MDN Zwane.
“I really take my hat off to those five guys, because we generally don’t give enough credit to the municipal workers, and we tend to always look at the downfalls of the municipality.”
He said in this instance their service was spectacular because they worked in pouring rain until 11pm on a Sunday night to complete the work. “I offered to get them a tent to work under so they didn’t get wet, but they explained the transformer was destroyed beyond repair and needed to be replaced using a crane.”
It is not known at this stage why the transformer exploded. However, the prompt service delivery provided by the workers proves that in emergency situations they always put the community first, so residents can rest assured.
