Vryheid dumpsite is bursting at the seams

A young boy rummages through the squalid rubbish that encroaches onto the road that leads up to Vryheid dumpsite, as a pig wallows in a fetid pool.

THE road to Vryheid Dumpsite is literally littered with garbage.

The state of the local eyesore that is Vryheid Dumpsite is fast becoming a major concern for business owners in the area and it was recently reported to the Vryheid Herald that rubbish is currently being dumped along the dirt road that leads to the dumpsite itself, which could have a severely detrimental impact on the environment, compromising several health and safety issues in the process.

“It’s disgusting,” stated a concerned businessman in the area. “Something must be done before this escalates into a serious health and safety issue.”

Last Friday, AbaQulusi Municipality officials as well as the Department of Environmental Services met at the dumpsite. After an emergency meeting was held to discuss what could be done to rectify the troublesome situation, it was decided that the municipality would need to hire machinery to fix the ever-increasing problem of the rubbish steadily encroaching onto the road.

On Tuesday morning, it was noted that a truck and a TLB were operational at the dumpsite. According to AfriForum’s Andrè van der Walt however, much bigger machines are necessary to solve this problem.
