BREAKING NEWS: Five dead in R34 collision
An unconfirmed number of people were rushed to the hospital for further treatment.
Five people were killed when a taxi and a truck collided on the R34 earlier this afternoon.
According to an unofficial source at the scene, it is believed the taxi swerved to avoid colliding with a stationary vehicle, but instead collided head-on with a truck.
The taxi then struck another vehicle before overturning.
According to the source, all emergency services including SAPS, the Road Traffic Inspectorate, Newcastle 911 Policing, firefighters and medics lent a hand at the scene.
Five people were pronounced dead at the scene, and many other passengers were rushed to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.
Although the precise details of the collision are unclear at this stage, SAPS officials have confirmed they will be conducting preliminary investigations.
The Newcastle Advertiser extends its condolences to friends and family of the deceased.
