KZN warned as severe cold weather approaches

Residents and farmers are urged to prepare for cold, wet and windy weather conditions.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has urged residents, motorists and farmers to remain vigilant as a severe weather system moves across parts of South Africa.

Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, through the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, issued the warning following an advisory from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) regarding an intense cut-off low-pressure system affecting several provinces.

Cold, wet and windy conditions expected

According to SAWS, the system is bringing bitterly cold, wet and windy conditions to large parts of the country. While the most significant disruptive rainfall is expected in the Western and Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal is forecast to experience a sharp drop in temperatures.

Snow forecast for Drakensberg

Light snowfall is also expected over the Drakensberg mountain range on Thursday, 4 June.

Motorists urged to exercise caution

Authorities have encouraged residents to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions, particularly those travelling through high-altitude areas where icy conditions could affect roads and visibility.

Farmers advised to protect livestock

Farmers have also been advised to protect livestock and make contingency plans for the cold weather conditions expected over the coming days.

Disaster management monitors situation

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
