Be vigilant when using the ATM

Be on the lookout for any suspicious individuals or vehicles and when using an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), never accept help from strangers

Opportunistic criminals are around every corner during the festive season, waiting to make a quick buck off unsuspecting people.

It is imperative that you remain vigilant when you’re shopping, driving or withdrawing money.

Be on the lookout for any suspicious individuals or vehicles and when using an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), never accept help from strangers.

Here are some tips from the South African Police Service about safe ATM usage:
• If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located inside a police station, mall or well-lit location. Withdraw only the amount of cash that you need.
• Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN) by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you.
• Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location.
• Do not accept assistance from anyone standing near the ATM, rather go inside the bank and ask bank personnel for assistance.
• Should anyone try to distract you at the ATM, cancel your transaction, remove your card and leave the area immediately. Report the matter to police immediately.
• Before using the ATM check for any discrepancies, feel along the slots and keypad for any suspicious items or false covers.
