The steady stream of sewage water running down Van Eck Drive caused a stench, and a resident wanted to see the end of it.
“I reported the matter two weeks ago to the municipality, but nothing has been done.”
Dismayed because the municipality did not repair the leak timeously, the resident was worried the sewage was flowing into a stormwater drain.
“All the mess is going into our water systems.”
Customer Relations Manager of Newcastle Municipality, Doctor Dumisani Thabethe said the leak was caused by a blockage. “It was unblocked, but it was blocked again. We have since then unblocked it again and checked if there was anything else blocking the line, or if the line had perhaps collapsed.”
Dr Thabethe said while blockages could pose a health hazard, residents did not have to worry that sewage flowing into a stormwater drain would contaminate the Ntshingwayo Dam.
