A festive season of social cohesion

During the festive season hosted a number of social cohesion programmes in various wards. These consisted of soccer tournaments, an Ingoma Festival, Iscathamiya and Gospel festival.

The Ingoma competition, which caters for groups and represents all wards was held at the Weenen Sports Ground on December 27. 35 groups participated, and included Isgenkle, Izintombi Sishameni and Ushameni wezinsizwa.

The competition was very tight with all groups giving it all to be crowned champions. This Ingoma competition is an annual event that has a fixed date on December 27.

Out of 16 groups the top ten that convinced the judges were:

First – Ushikishi, second – Shanela, third – Omahlalela, fourth – Gomba, fifth – Inyoka eluhlazana, sixth Nokopela, seventh – Ludimbi, eighth – Inhlawe, ninth – ISibalo amd tenth Inkas’emnyama.

The top five for izintombi were: Izintombi Zegolide, Izintombi Zoshikishi, Izintombi Zanokopela, Izintombi Zenyokana Eluhlazana and Izintombi Zakaludimbi.

In the Omama category in first place was Intando Yabanti, second was Impumelelo, third was Amafikalishona, fourth was Omamabesizwe and in fifth place was Inyoka Eluhlazana.

The Ingoma in Loskop had ten participants and this festival was held at the Injeza Sports Ground in Emakekeni on December 31. This section of the municipality is well-known for unique traditional dance moves called ‘Umzansi’, with a unique style of adjudication.

On December 30, the municipality staged an Isicathamiya festival with an attempt of reviving this cothoza type of traditional music, which used to be the pride of people back in the days. Isibani Sezwe and Ubuhle Bomthandazo were the winners on the day.

The inaugural gospel festival was held on New Year’s Eve at the Estcourt Town Hall from 6pm to 2am. This was an effort by the local municipality to revive gospel music. A crossover service was also held, asking the Almighty to usher us safely into 2017.

The municipality is glad to state that all social cohesion programmes were a success, since many genres were catered for to accommodate the diverse talents that this municipality has.
