Donell dreams of Shark stardom
A versatile player, he can play as a hooker, prop, eighth man or flank.

Donell Griffiths is one step away from making his dreams come true.
The 18-year-old from Dundee, who schooled at Volksrust High, has been invited to attend the under/19 Sharks Academy. The practice camp kicks off in February, with trials taking place at the end of the academy.
A sports lover from an early age, Donell enjoyed playing rugby and hockey, but as he got older, his passion for rugby took centre stage. At Volksrust High, he was given a chance to really showcase his skills and properly develop them. A versatile player, Donell can play as a hooker, prop, eighth man or flank. He also got to show his worth at Craven Week. “It was a great experience being part of Craven Week. You learn a lot, it boosts your confidence and you get to make a lot of friends.” He also got to meet Springbok players at the event, including Pat Lambie and his idol, Marcel Coetzee.

As exciting as Craven Week was, the truly breath-taking moment was when he was offered the chance to attend the Sharks Academy. Players who catch the eye of Sharks scouts are approached by one of the players to invite them to the academy. Donell was approached by none other than Pat Lambie. “There are no words to describe how it feels to be approached by a role model.”
Donell aims to make the most of the opportunity and hopes to one day play for the senior Sharks team and for the Springboks. Should his rugby career take off, Donell doesn’t plan on forgetting where he comes from and plans to return home and help promote the development of the sport for many more talented players in the area.
However, to make his dreams come true, Donell needs financial assistance to help with the costs of being part of such an exclusive academy. Anyone willing to assist Donell can contact him on 063 532 8682.
