A combined Buffalo Coal/Mbube Security operation has made a major breakthrough in the theft of coal.
Kevern Mattison, General Manager of Buffalo Coal, received information last Thursday evening that a truck, laden with coal, had driven out of the Coalfields washing plant on the Helpmekaar road without the proper authorisation.

He reacted immediately and spotted the truck being driven up Victoria Street.
Back-up was called for during which time it was learnt that at least four other fully loaded trucks had also been driven out of the washing plant loading area.

The coal loads on double wagon trailers – around 30 tonnes per wagon each – were dumped at the side of the road before the drivers attempted to flee.

An all-out car and truck chase followed with the trucks having opted to travel in various directions: towards Madadeni, in the vicinity of Dannhauser and another to Ladysmith.
All but one of the truck drivers were apprehended. The coal loads on double wagon trailers – around 30 tonnes per wagon each – were dumped at the side of the road before the drivers attempted to flee.

The value of the coal is around R200 000, Mr Mattison confirmed.
The drivers were taken to various police stations and a charge of theft was opened at the Dundee Police Station. More arrests of security guards stationed at the washing plant were also effected. A police investigation is continuing.
