Nine killed in weekend carnage

The driver of a Toyota Corrolla was lucky to escape injury at 6:30am on Sunday morning, after his car went off the road about 5km out of Vryheid on the Kambula road.

A SLEW of accidents in and around Vryheid over the weekend has led to the tragic passing of nine people.

Chris Marais, Pieter Fourie and the team from JVS Towing and Recovery, had a busy weekend keeping up with the carnage on the roads, which seemed to start on Saturday afternoon when a Hyundai i20 overturned on the Bloedrivierpoort gravel road, resulting in minor injuries for the occupants of the vehicle.

An hour later, at 1pm, another crash resulted in minor injuries for the occupants of two vehicles involved in a collision on Church Street.

Two hours after the second accident, emergency services responded to the horrific scene of a head-on collision on the Stilwater train bridge that claimed two lives and left one person severely injured.

A minor accident occurred at the corner of Church and President Streets at 5pm, but no injuries were reported.

Later on Saturday night at approximately 7pm, three people lost their lives and another six were injured when the bakkie they were traveling in rolled on the Skurweberg gravel road.

An hour later, another head-on collision took place on the Melmoth road, between a Kia bakkie and a BMW, claiming the lives of three people. One person was declared dead at the scene. Two succumbed to their injuries later.

At 11pm, approximately 17km out of Vryheid, also on the Melmoth road, another accident took place in which a goat came to blows with a Kia Sorento. Aside from the goat, no injuries were reported.

At 11:30am, tragedy struck on the Lüneberg road when a Nissan bakkie overturned, killing one and leaving four critically injured.

Two hours later, another Hyundai i20 rolled on the Hlobane road, with minor injuries reported.

At 3pm, a brand new Toyota bakkie rolled on the Hlobane road. No injuries were reported.
