Latest update: Cyclone Dineo leaves 7 dead and 14 injured as it ravages Mozambique, but brings welcome rain to Ladysmith and Northern KZN

Dineo has killed seven people and seriously injured 14 others in Mozambique since her arrival - the death toll may rise

With over 20,000 homes destroyed in Mozambique, and millions of rands in damage, Cyclone Dineo has left its mark on the coastline of Mozambique.

The storm hit the coast on Wednesday with massive force… The government’s disaster centre has confirmed winds of up to 160km/h, raising the risk of flooding and crop damage.

Heavy rain has also been falling in Limpopo.

The storm‚ which was downgraded from a tropical cyclone yesterday morning‚ was expected to bring anything from 100mm to 200mm of rain within the first 24 hours of making landfall.

Dineo has killed seven people and seriously injured 14 others in Mozambique since her arrival. Over 170,000 people have been affected by the storm. The death toll may rise.

Currently, Dineo is no more, as once a storm is downgraded to a tropical depression, it loses its name. Ladysmith in Northern KZN was initially plotted to be in the path of the incoming cyclone.

But later predictions put the town outside the path of the storm.

Even when it turned into a tropical storm, and its path was tracked up through Mpumalanga and Limpopo, it was expected to bring rainfall to surrounding areas. Today, Ladysmith residents are seeing the first of that rain.
